First-year University of Southern Mississippi student Ashley Hite characterized her emotions as both “excited, but a little nervous” while waiting for class to begin Wednesday morning on the opening day of the fall 2016 semester.
Hite, a Soso, Miss., native, is a transfer student from Jones County Junior College in Ellisville who plans to major in Elementary Education. She joined hundreds of students crisscrossing the Hattiesburg campus for the first official day of classes. Classes also began Wednesday on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Pride of Mississippi Marching Band and the Dixie Darlings will kick off the 2016-17 season with Pride Preview. This free concert will be held Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at Centennial Green on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus, and all are invited to bring lawn chairs and picnic dinners to enjoy an evening of music and entertainment.

Presented by Keesler Federal Credit Union, these events were held for Southern Miss alumni and fans to celebrate the upcoming 2016 Golden Eagle football season.
