The University of Southern Mississippi University Police Department (UPD) received a certificate of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) recently during a ceremony held in Mobile, Ala.


A large, energetic crowd turned out for a panel discussion of Kathryn Stockett’s immensely popular novel “The Help” on Wednesday, March 28 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Thad Cochran Center.


Panelists included Forrest County Justice Court Judge Deborah Gambrell Chambers; University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Vice-President/Executive Officer Frances Lucas and New York publicist Stella Connell. Dr. Kim LeDuff, associate professor in the Southern Miss School of Mass Communication and Journalism, served as the moderator.


Because of the possibility of inclement weather, The University of Southern Mississippi will hold its Founders’ Day activities in Bennett Auditorium Friday, March 30 at 3 p.m. with a reception to follow at 4:30 p.m. at the Student Activities Hub. Both facilities are located at the center of the Hattiesburg campus.


The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Biological Sciences’ annual spring plant sale will be held Saturday, March 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Stepping Stone Rock and Garden Center in Oak Grove, located behind Optimist Park. A wide variety of selections will be available.


The list of career accolades continues to grow for University of Southern Mississippi polymer science researcher Dr. Robert Lochhead, who has been selected to receive the Chemical Pioneer Award by the American Institute of Chemists (AIC).


Dr. Frances A. Karnes, distinguished university professor in the department of curriculum, instruction and special education at The University of Southern Mississippi and director of the Frances Karnes Center for Gifted Studies; Dr. Kristen Stephens, assistant professor at Duke University; and John Dudley, a doctoral student in political science at the University of Mississippi, have written a chapter in the book, “Identification-The Theory and Practice of Identifying Students for Gifted and Talented Education Services,” published by Creative Learning Press and edited by Scott Hunsaker.


The Friends of the University Libraries at The University of Southern Mississippi recently funded new electronic books for the libraries’ nursing collection. The donation comes during a trend toward online learning within the field.
