Thomas Schmidt of Ocean Springs, Miss. received a second lieutenant commission into the U.S. Army after completing the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program at The University of Southern Mississippi during the spring 2014 semester. ROTC helps train college students to become an officer in the U.S. military.

Ten students from the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at The University of Southern Mississippi recently participated in Digi Day, an opportunity for students in SLIS to obtain service hours and digitization experience while assisting the digital lab with existing projects. Elizabeth La Beaud, manager of the University Libraries’ digital lab, and Emilie Aplin, president of the Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA), organized the event.

As temperatures rise throughout the long, hot days of summer in South Mississippi, so too does the presence of mosquitoes. And with that pesky insect comes the threat of West Nile Virus.

 

The mosquito-transmitted disease has been on the upswing nationwide over the past several years. It is estimated that the virus has killed more than 1,500 people and infected more than 50,000 Americans in the last 15 years.
