Jennifer Torres, professor in the Department of Art and Design at The University of Southern Mississippi, recently won the Seawall Art Award for her sculpture “Home for Everyone” at the Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center’s 2014 Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit in Portsmouth, Va. in September.

Charmaine Schmermund, assistant director of public relations at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park Campus, received two awards at the 2014 Southern Public Relations Federation’s (SPRF) annual conference last month in New Orleans.

The Southern Miss Food Research Group, a collaboration of various departments at The University of Southern Mississippi that study food, will host “The Culinary Communities of Mississippi: Farm, Table and Campus,” a lecture series that will explore how we cook, eat and grow food in Mississippi.

The first lecture will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Peck House-Asbury Annex on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus. "The Carrot and the Stick: The Role of Government in Nutrition" will be presented by Dr. Joseph Weinberg, a political science professor at Southern Miss.

The Department of English on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park Campus will present a Fall 2014 film series titled “The Open Road and the American Frontier” with the first screening and discussion on Oct. 23. The series explores various responses to the closing of the American frontier.

The University of Southern Mississippi Roots N’ Shoots chapter, along with the Department of Biological Sciences, is hosting the Haunted Halloween Science Trail on Friday, Oct. 31 in the Biological Sciences Learning Center (BSLC), located in the basement of Mississippi Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.
