The University of Southern Mississippi will usher in the holiday season with the annual “Lighting the Way of the Holidays” and “Songfest” celebrations in early December.

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive on Monday, Dec. 1, to examine all aspects of the University of Southern Mississippi Police Department policy and procedures, management, operations and support services, Chief of Police Robert N. Hopkins announced today.

Students at The University of Southern Mississippi now have an opportunity to study geography abroad in Costa Rica in 2015.

 

Dr. David Harms Holt, associate professor of geography at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach, will lead up to 24 students on a 17-day study abroad trip based at the Instituto Monteverde in Monteverde, Costa Rica May 9 – 25, 2015.

For six years, graduate students and professors at The University of Southern Mississippi have worked hand-in-hand with the staff at DuBard School for Language Disorders to bring music education to students with language disorders.

The University of Southern Mississippi now offers a special course program that will appeal to individuals working for non-profit organizations. The Graduate Nonprofit Studies (NPS) Certificate is an interdisciplinary program appropriate for individuals with a baccalaureate degree who are currently employed in or wish to transition to the nonprofit sector and need additional or specialized training.

For the second time in the past three years, The University of Southern Mississippi has won the Donor Challenge sponsored by the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA). Chuck Stinson, director of marketing and media relations for MORA, presented a $500 donation and Donor Challenge trophy to Dianne Coleman, assistant to the dean in the College of Health, during a special ceremony held Friday, Nov. 21. College of Health ambassadors guided Southern Miss to the Donor Challenge win. The challenge is a form of college outreach that promotes the need for organ, eye and tissue donation. During the five-week challenge period, Southern Miss accounted for more donor designation than the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University combined. The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation recently completed two special fundraising initiatives that resulted in gifts totaling more than $2.25 million toward the campaigns.

 

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a fundraising campaign that netted approximately $1.17 million. The Moffitt Health Center Campaign, launched to help provide a new student health services facility on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus, raised approximately $1.08 million.

University Libraries at The University of Southern Mississippi will host an OpenCon 2014 satellite event for the student and early career researcher conference on Open Access, Open Education and Open Data, Monday, Nov. 24 from 4-5 p.m. in Cook Library room 123 on the Hattiesburg campus.
