Hundreds of guests, including Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, joined The University of Southern Mississippi in celebrating the acquisition of its newest research vessel, the Point Sur, Friday, April 24, at the Port of Gulfport. The University acquired the state-of-the-art research vessel in February 2015 through a $1 million grant provided by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

 

“The Point Sur will provide unparalleled opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students as they venture into the Gulf of Mexico and gain hands-on research experience,” said University President Rodney D. Bennett.

The Live Oak Writing Project at The University of Southern Mississippi will host Camp Live Oak June 22 – 26 at the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. For students entering fifth through seventh grades, Camp Live Oak will explore the power of writing through digital tools.

Students in the School of Social Work at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus made presentations at the Mississippi chapter of the National Association of Social Workers conference, held last month at the Golden Nugget Casino Hotel in Biloxi.

Erica Estes, a graduate student pursing a master’s degree in sports management at The University of Southern Mississippi, was elected as the National Student Leader for NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation. She also serves as graduate assistant for facilities and fitness in the recreational sports department.

University of Southern Mississippi student Bethany Cuevas of Long Beach won the title of Miss Magnolia earlier this spring in Corinth, Miss. With her title, Cuevas, an elementary education major at the university’s Gulf Park campus, will have the opportunity to compete for the title of Miss Mississippi this summer in Vicksburg.
