The popular Science Café series at Cook Library on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus will kick off Monday, Feb. 29 from 6-7 p.m. in room 123. The opening program is titled GLOBE (The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment Program). Sherry Herron with the USM Department of Biological Sciences will be the presenter.

Dr. Cyndi Gaudet, Chair and Professor in the Department of Human Capital Development at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus, led a group of faculty, students and alumnus as participants in the 2016 Academy of Human Resource Development International Research Conference in the Americas Feb. 18-22 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Research in the development of spatial insect repellents continues to be of paramount importance as insect-transmitted diseases remain a threat wherever mosquito populations exist.

 

Dr. Paige Buchanan, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been working with the Army on topics related to the development and application of spatial insect repellents.

University of Southern Mississippi students Jaylen Hackett and JD Rimann have moved significantly closer to reaching historic academic milestones as the University’s newest finalists for the coveted Truman Scholarship.

 

Hackett, a political science/economics major from Mobile, Ala., and Rimann, a history/English/political science major from Red Rock, Texas, hope to follow in the footsteps of previous Southern Miss Truman scholars – Stephanie McCracken (2014), Brandon Hersey (2013), Marie Holowach Federer (2011) and Lance Brown (1999).

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre's spring season includes Thornton Wilder’s “The Matchmaker.” with scheduled show times Feb. 26, 27 and Mar. 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.

Kristen Dupard, a senior biochemistry major at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected to present her research at the 30th Annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) April 7-9 at the University of North Carolina Asheville.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach has been recognized as a Platinum Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association. This is the only Platinum Level designation awarded to a Gulf Coast business or organization in 2016.

Professor Laurent Pernot, a specialist in ancient Greek rhetoric, will make presentations at The University of Southern Mississippi on the continued importance of ancient rhetoric to modern issues Friday, Mar. 4 at 2 p.m. in Gonzales Auditorium; Monday, Mar. 7, 5:30 p.m. in the International Center room 101; and Tuesday, March 8, 6:30 p.m. in the International Center, room 101.
