Dr. Faye Gilbert, dean of the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been recognized with the inaugural “Dean of the Year” award by Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) honor society.

University of Southern Mississippi Assistant Professor of History Dr. Rebecca Tuuri was recently announced as a 2016 recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) Summer Stipend. Tuuri is one of three professors in the state of Mississippi to win this prestigious honor, which places her in the 9th percentile of college professors across the United States whose submitted projects were chosen.

Children’s literature author Jacqueline Woodson says writing is a way to help her understand the world. And as far as her fans are concerned, the world is better for her writing.  

Woodson was awarded the 49th annual Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival’s Southern Miss Medallion, the event’s top honor, on April 7 during the three-day event on the Hattiesburg campus. She also served as a keynote speaker for the festival.

Dr. S. James Gates, left, an internationally recognized physicist and the John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, College Park, visited with students and faculty members in The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Physics and Astronomy Friday, April 8 over lunch on the Hattiesburg campus to discuss his research, advances in the field of physics and career opportunities in the sciences. On April 7, he was guest speaker for the department’s first Rayborn Lecture in Physics during which he spoke about his research involving supersymmetry or “SUSY.” (University Communication photo by David Tisdale)

University of Southern Mississippi alumna Lamenda Hase was recently awarded the John K. Bettersworth Award from the Mississippi Historical Society. She was presented the award during the Mississippi Historical Society’s annual meeting held March 5 in Jackson.

One of the most important collections of oral histories based on the civil rights movement is housed in The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage (COHCH). Because of its significance, the Center was awarded a grant from the National Endowment of Humanities (NEH) in 2014 to digitize more than 425 of the interviews that spotlight a transformational period in Mississippi and American history.

Earlier today, The University of Southern Mississippi received the NCAA Committee on Infractions' Public Report related to allegiations involving the institution's former Men's Basketball staff during the academic years 2012-13 and 2013-14. The issuance of the Public Report is the final step in the NCAA's enforcement process.
