A free and public forum regarding the issue of wrongful convictions will be held Thursday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 pm in the International Center auditorium on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

A lecture on the Calhoun City community cookbook will be given by Dr. Andrew Haley, associate professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi, on Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Cook Library 123 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi has received special recognition by the Mississippi Business Journal in the publication’s announcement of the 2016 Mississippi’s Healthiest Workplace Awards. USM was awarded second place in the College or University, Public/Private division.

Following several months of research and leadership input, the student chapter of the Alumni Association has been renamed as the Student Alumni Association, or SAA. Formerly known as The Legacy, this student organization serves as the campus leader in promoting spirit and enthusiasm and proudly considers themselves the “keepers of tradition” at Southern Miss.

Balancing studies, work, tuition and bills is stressful for any university student. When funds to pay for food are limited, another layer of stress is added.

 

The School of Social Work Student Association of Social Workers (SASW) at The University of Southern Mississippi is determined to eliminate this stress. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, the group will open the doors to The Eagle’s Nest, a student-run food pantry for Southern Miss students and staff.

Three concerts headline The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music’s concert calendar in the upcoming week. The Symphonic Winds kick things off Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium, followed by guest flutist Raffaele Trevisani on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. in Marsh Auditorium. Finally, the Wind Ensemble performs with Trevisani on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. All concerts are free and open to the public.

The Dale Center for the Study of War and Society at The University of Southern Mississippi recently received an anonymous $100,000 gift to establish The Dale Center Fellowship for Graduate Students. This five-year program will support up to five 12-month graduate assistantships.

In a partnership between The University of Southern Mississippi and the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board (MSVAB), a new service position has now come available on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach to be of assistance to military veterans along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
