The Speech and Debate Society at The University of Southern Mississippi will host a debate between Mark Gladney (D) and Ric McCluskey (L), candidates for U.S. House of Representatives, District 4. The event is free and open to the public and will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Thad Cochran Center Ballroom I.

The University of Southern Mississippi has a full slate of festivities planned this week in conjunction with its annual Homecoming celebration. The week culminates with the traditional Homecoming football game as the Golden Eagles host the Marshall Thundering Herd in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Roberts Stadium.

The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will perform its third concert of the season on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus. Entitled Close Connections, the program musically highlights the close relationship between the two, featured composers: Richard Strauss and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This wonderful evening of music includes the exceptional talents of the School of Music’s assistant professor of oboe, Galit Kaunitz.

Teachers from Mississippi’s prestigious School of the Arts and from other schools across the state will be guests of the Frances Karnes Center for Gifted Studies Tuesday, Oct. 25 on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. The teachers will be participants in a seminar presented by Dr. Suzanne McKee-Waddell, titled “Embracing Digital Writing for the Gifted Classroom.”

Dr. Julie Cwikla, Director of Creativity & Innovation in STEM, Office of Vice President for Research at The University of Southern Mississippi, will be a featured speaker for Mississippi’s first TEDxJacksonWomen Conference set for Thursday, Oct. 27 in downtown Jackson.

John Cox has experienced nearly four decades’ worth of University of Southern Mississippi homecomings, the majority of them in the radio broadcast booth as the “Voice of the Golden Eagles.”

And before prepping to call the Oct. 29 USM-Marshall football game, Cox has another important duty to fulfill earlier in the day – serving as grand marshal for the school’s annual homecoming parade, which begins at 11 a.m. at Midtown Market on Hardy Street and travels to the main entrance of the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Office of University Communications has earned the Southern Public Relations Federation’s (SPRF) William A. Taylor Best of Show Award for its “My Southern Miss Story”" campaign as part of a strategy to recruit new students utilizing advertising.

Select faculty at The University of Southern Mississippi are currently participating in a national development initiative designed to dramatically expand the use of evidence-based teaching practices shown to promote college student completion and success.

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of History, through sponsorship from the Mississippi Humanities Council, is hosting an instructional workshop on National History Day in Mississippi on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the William Winter Building Orientation Room in downtown Jackson. This free workshop, financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council, is designed for high school and middle school teachers, students and parents, as well as homeschooling parents of middle and high school aged children.
