The first major deadline of the Affordable Care Act open enrollment period is Thursday, Dec. 15. Uninsured Mississippians who want to enroll in quality, affordable health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace must enroll by this date if they want their new coverage to begin Jan. 1. For consumers who need to renew their coverage, Dec. 15 is the deadline to choose a plan so they do not experience any gap in coverage for the start of 2017.

Janette Hreish, a graduate student in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected for a competitive internship in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Department at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Dr. Rose Jones, center, assistant professor in The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education, along with students in her CIP 340 Foundational Studies in Early Childhood Education class, recently toured the historic Roberts one-room schoolhouse, located on the Hattiesburg campus in the courtyard of Owings-McQuagge Hall. The small, antique building is an example of the early accommodations for students in elementary, middle and high schools that often included no more than one large room. The tour was led by Dr. Debbie Stoulig, coordinator of NCATE Assessment.

Career Services at The University of Southern Mississippi recently received a $2,500 gift from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation, which also awarded the University’s Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families a $500 gift.

The application deadline is near for the Saturday Gifted Studies Program, conducted by the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. Students who have not submitted an application by Saturday, Dec. 10 will not be able to participate in the program.

In today’s world, there is a constant need for qualified teachers in our public schools. That is why The University of Southern Mississippi offers qualified teacher assistants currently working in the classroom a way to become certified teachers, all while staying in their community and working at their current jobs.

 

“Teacher assistants provide a great service to the K-6 community,” said Dr. Kelley Stricklin, Teacher Assistant Program (TAP) coordinator. “They play a key role in helping educate students by supplementing what the teacher is doing and helping build upon the quality of lessons and activities.”

Dr. William C. “Bill” Smith, a recently retired University of Southern Mississippi College of Business marketing professor who earned several honors for teaching, research and service in his 37-year tenure at the school, will give the keynote address for its fall commencement ceremonies.
