Shawn Arrington’s academic and career path took shape after he enrolled in a new course offered by The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Psychology.

“Orientation to the Psychology Major” (PSY 203) is designed for the incoming cohort of psychology majors at Southern Miss, including freshmen and new transfer students. The one-hour course meets once a week and was launched in the fall 2017 semester. It focuses on helping students become familiar with the university, engage with the department through meetings with faculty members, establish connections with peers, improve study habits and identify areas of interest in their curriculum, as well as learning about careers in psychology and graduate education in the field.

University of Mississippi Blues Curator, Greg Johnson, will deliver a multimedia presentation on the history of music in Mississippi in the final event in the series, “Lectures, Lore and Lessons: Mississippi at the Bicentennial,” Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Blu Jazz Café in downtown Hattiesburg. The series is presented by Special Collections at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Angela Ball, award-winning poet and professor in the Department of English at The University of Southern Mississippi, has published her sixth book of poetry from the University of Pittsburgh Press. A release party celebrating Talking Pillow will be held at T-Bone’s Records & Café in Hattiesburg Friday, Dec. 1 at 8:30 p.m. Ball will read some selected poems and sign copies following the reading.

For the second consecutive year, the University of Southern Mississippi has been ranked by Military Times as one of the Top-20 “Best for Vets” universities across the United States. USM, the highest-ranked university in Mississippi, is rated No. 17 out of the 140 four-year institutions that earned recognition.
