Dr. Andrew Wiest, professor of history and founding director of The University of Southern Mississippi Department of History’s Dale Center for the Study of War and Society, gives a talk on the Vietnam War to 10th-grade students from Simpson (Miss.) Academy, Wednesday, April 18 at historic College Hall on the Hattiesburg campus. University of Southern Mississippi doctoral student Abagail Williams has been chosen to receive a prestigious Graduate Student Research Program (SCGSR) award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Williams is one of only 60 graduate students nationwide to earn the honor.

University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven R. Moser has announced the appointment of Dr. Chris Winstead as the founding dean of the University’s College of Arts and Sciences. The appointment is effective July 1, pending approval from the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning.

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) celebrated the opening of the new $16.1-million Marine Education Center (MEC) early Monday morning with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s (GCRL) Cedar Point site in Ocean Springs.

 

“This facility is the crown jewel of marine education at USM,” said Dr. Monty Graham, Director for the USM School of Ocean Science and Technology (SOST). “I have been to many marine laboratories around the world. The MEC is by far the best of all of them. It will catapult us far ahead of some very prestigious marine education powerhouses.”
