David Cochran and Joohee Lee have a pretty good idea about how prepared Mississippi Gulf Coast residents are for the next Big One, whether it be a natural or a manmade disaster.

 

The short answer: Less and less prepared every day, as the memories of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 diminish – and as the turnover in population produces new residents who never experienced the disasters in the first place.

The University of Southern Mississippi Connoisseur series presents Brentano String Quartet on Oct. 26 at 6:00 p.m. in Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus. Earlier in the day masterclasses will be presented at various locations.

A favorite among students, faculty, staff, and visitors on The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Hattiesburg campus will help the school’s homecoming parade ‘percolate’ down Hardy Street to its destination.

Gloria Peterson, an associate with Aramark’s Eagle Dining and Fresh Food Company, has been chosen to serve as grand marshal of this year’s homecoming parade, which is set to roll beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 east down Hardy Street from the Midtown Shopping Center to the main entrance of campus.

A debate between The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Speech and Debate Team and the British National Debate Team will take place Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the International Center (IC), room 101 on the Hattiesburg campus. This event is free and open to the public. The proposition to be debated is "Resolved: This House would prefer a world with open borders."
