Students and faculty members at Mississippi Public Universities represent a powerful force for good when they devote their time and talent to numerous community service opportunities. In the 2018 fiscal year, more than 15,000 student and staff volunteers gave more than 400,000 hours of their time to work on more than 3,700 projects. This equates to more than $33,000,000 in volunteer time. University volunteers raised almost $650,000 through their efforts.

Dr. Kevin Greene, assistant professor of history and director of the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) recently made a presentation based on his first book, "The Invention and Reinvention of Big Bill Broonzy" in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium at the Two Mississippi Museums (Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum) as part of the “History is Lunch” series Feb. 13.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s first-of-its-kind fully online Nursing Leadership Ph.D. program has extended the application for fall 2019 admission to March 1. The program, which is designed to bring nurses into leadership roles, offers students a unique way to complete their Ph.D. from the comforts of their home.

The Laurel Sertoma Club has established a $25,000 fund to aid those children and families unable to meet the costs associated with any fee-based service offered by the DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi. The check will be presented to the DuBard School on Feb. 20.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Library at its Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach is presenting the exhibit “Fun-Da-Mental Adventure in Art, Studies from the Last Three Years,” by Gulf Coast artist Milton Williams. The exhibit is on display on the first and second floors of the Gulf Coast Library through April.

Atlanta-based Resurgens Theatre Company will present Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s The Changeling on Monday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center Auditorium on The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach.
