The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association is working to increase funding for the Robert D. Pierce Legacy Scholars Program by selling personalized bricks through its Buy a Brick, Leave a Legacy campaign.

The bricks, which may be engraved by alumni, family and friends of the university, will be placed on the Hattiesburg campus located in the plaza between Shoemaker Square and Cook Library.

Bricks are available in two sizes: 4 inches by 8 inches with up to three lines of 14 characters each and 8 inches by 8 inches with five lines of 14 characters each. The 4-by-8 brick is available for $250 and the 8-by-8 brick is $500. For only $15 more, a brick may be purchased in honor of a recent graduate, and a one-year Association gift membership will be added.

All purchasers will receive a miniature replica of the brick ordered, and a portion of all gifts are tax deductible. The proceeds from this initiative support the Association’s Pierce Legacy Scholars Program, which works to provide one-time $1,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen that are children or grandchildren of members of the Association.

For more than 10 years, the Alumni Association has been working to generate funding for scholarships for second- and third-generation Southern Miss students. Through participation in the Buy a Brick, Leave a Legacy Program, alumni and friends of the university have the opportunity to assist the Association in its efforts to increase the number of beneficiaries of the Robert D. Pierce II Scholarship.

“While we were pleased to honor six incoming freshmen with this award in 2012, the Association’s ultimate goal is to provide a one-time $1,000 scholarship to all children and grandchildren of alumni entering Southern Miss,” said Jerry DeFatta, executive director of the Southern Miss Alumni Association. “The Buy a Brick, Leave a Legacy Program will increase our progress toward that goal.”

Bricks are currently available and can be purchased online by visiting www.SouthernMissAlumni.com/leavealegacy.
