With Pasco County, Fla., residents being forced to seek safety from dangerously strong storms during hurricane season, the Mike Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter was designed. Sitting on 5.54 acres, this renowned 38,395-square-foot shelter is capable of housing 1,000 occupants and sustaining winds of 190 mph. Its environmental design conserves energy, allowing the shelter to function self-sustaining for up to 72 hours.

The mastermind behind this U.S. Green Building Council LEED Silver award-winning structure is University of Southern Mississippi alumnus and Florida native Richard M. Bekesh. Soon after graduating from Southern Miss in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering technology, Bekesh established Spring Engineering, Inc. (SEI).

Seeking to share what he has learned thus far in his career with the next generation of architects, engineers, interior designers and contractors, Bekesh will present the 2017 Craft of Construction Leadership Lecture for the USM College of Science and Technology’s School of Construction. On Thursday, Nov. 9 from 12:15-1 p.m. at the Polymer Science Auditorium, Bekesh will discuss the programing, site design, building implementation and research, 3D renderings and construction for the Mike Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter, as well as other architectural projects he has coordinated. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Bekesh has served as president and chief operating officer for the firm, which offers innovative architecture, engineering and land planning services to a wide variety of public, private and institutional clients throughout Florida and the nation. As the recipient of numerous design and industry awards, including the 2015 Bright House Business of the Year award for the eight-county Tampa Bay region, SEI has built a strong reputation for excellence in their field.
