Another Exciting Season of Theatre and Dance Planned at Southern Miss

Main Content

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts & Letters is gearing up for an exciting spring season of performances which will include showstoppers such as “Rumors,” “Anna in the Tropics,” and “The Grapes of Wrath.”

In “Rumors,” the deputy mayor of New York has just shot himself. Four couples have gathered for his anniversary celebration and must get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into hilarious farce in classic Neil Simon style. From Broadway to theatres throughout the country, “Rumors”spread as fast as laughter. This performance contains strong language.

The 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Anna in the Tropics” is set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in Florida in 1929, where cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector who reads aloud from Anna Karenina becomes a catalyst in the lives of his listeners, leading them to express passionate needs and desires. This production incorporates a pre-show talk at 1 p.m. on April 1, 2012.

Winner of the 1990 Tony Award, “The Grapes of Wrath” is a powerful stage adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel that depicts the struggle of one family’s flight from the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma during the Great Depression. Their journey to California reveals the strength of the human spirit in a timeless story that has become an American masterpiece. This performance contains strong language and incorporates a pre-show talk at 1 p.m. on April 22, 2012.

Among the other planned performances:

Repertory Dance Company at Southern Miss Spring Concert: This features work by students, faculty and guest artists, all performed by the department’s most talented students. Expect to see athleticism and grace as dance majors bring to life the ideas of fellow choreographers. This concert is a must-see for the spring semester.

Studio 115 Dance Concert: The intimate setting of the Studio 115 Concert is a chance to see dance up close. The Repertory Dance Company concludes its season with a spring soiree into the creativity of students and faculty choreographers.

Chicago Dance Artists’ Series: This brings Chicago’s cutting-edge choreographers to Southern Miss and Hattiesburg audiences. Look for open rehearsals and performances/video showings by Peter Carpenter, Nana Shineflug, and Molly Shanahan throughout the semester.
