Limited space is available for 6-8th graders for the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris 2015 Summer Science Camp set for June 14-27 at The University of Southern Mississippi. The camp is open to students across Mississippi and the application deadline is May 1.

Previously the camp was open to students from limited counties. However, it has been opened to students from around the state.

“We’ve had so many local Mississippi residents with a desire to attend our ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp that we decided to open applications to all students attending any school in the state of Mississippi,” said Marks McWhorter, Outreach Coordinator for the Department of Biological Sciences.

The camp allows 48 students to attend a two-week long academic, residential summer science camp free of charge. The camp theme will be “Coastal and Ocean Awareness through Science and Technology” or COAST.

The two-week camp is June 14 – 27 on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus. Students live on campus and participate in interactive, inquiry-based classes taught by university faculty, secondary school teachers and STEM educators.

Campers also have the opportunity to explore local museums and nature centers − discovering science within their communities. Students will learn about unique habitats in south Mississippi through field excursions and collaborate with and learn from scientists.

Students must be entering sixth, seventh or eighth grades in the fall of 2015 and have a GPA of at least a “B” overall in mathematics and science. Complete eligibility requirements can be found by going to the website, www.usm.edu/biology and selecting Summer Camps.
