Biloxi Native to Speak About Life Story, Domestic Abuse at USM Gulf Park

Main Content

Biloxi native and University of Southern Mississippi alumna Christy Pickering will appear in a self-entitled presentation called “Girl, You Deserve Better: A Night with Christy Pickering” Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the University’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

During this evening presentation, Pickering will speak on her life story about living in an abusive relationship for 21 years. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center Auditorium.

“It took me many years to get to the point where I felt comfortable sharing my story. I was embarrassed to admit the mistakes I made,” said Pickering. “I, however, now see that the only way I can help others is to admit those mistakes and share what I learned from them.”

The University and Gulf Coast community are invited to join in on this frank discussion about domestic abuse, endurance and how Pickering finally found happiness.

Title IX Coordinator Dr. Rebecca Malley, whose office responds to complaints of domestic violence, said she is grateful Pickering is bringing her presentation to the University. She said she hopes that anyone who hears Pickering’s story is moved to make changes and allow her office to assist in any way possible.

“I am impressed that Mrs. Pickering is willing to share her story of abuse – mental, emotional and physical – at the hands of an abusive partner,” said Malley. “I anticipate that her story of abuse, recovery and renewal will inspire those in similar situations to stop the cycle of abuse in their own lives.”

Pickering is a member of the Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees. She was appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour in May of 2008 to represent the Second Supreme Court District. For 25 years, she has operated her own accounting firm, Christy Pickering, CPA, in Biloxi. She has experience in the fields of auditing and assurance, tax preparation, and litigation support. She graduated with honors from the University, earning her Bachelor of Science in business administration.

Pickering will present a Lunch and Learn on the same topic on Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 12:15 – 1 p.m. in the Hardy Hall University Club on the Gulf Park campus.
