The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation and the School of Mass Communication and Journalism will announce a major fundraising campaign to benefit the school on Friday, Feb. 8 during a luncheon in the Trent Lott Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The “Campaign for Mass Comm” will capitalize on the school’s move to a renovated College Hall in the fall of 2013. The campaign is designed to raise money to furnish and equip the facility as well as to create new endowments for scholarships and professorships in the school.

“Our goal is to significantly raise the school’s profile,” said Dr. Chris Campbell, director of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism. “The faculty recently adopted a strategic plan that calls for the program to become one of the best in the country. The move to College Hall is a great first step, but we know that in the long run we need to increase the amount of financial support we can offer to outstanding students and to continue to build an excellent faculty.”

Bob Pierce, vice-president for advancement and the executive director of the USM Foundation, says the School of Mass Communication and Journalism is well positioned to become one of the University’s premier programs.

“The number of Southern Miss alumni who have had extraordinary careers in the media is incredibly impressive,” said Pierce. “Mass communication education at Southern Miss has mostly occurred in antiquated facilities and has never been particularly well resourced, so we are confident that the move to College Hall, along with this campaign, will significantly enhance the University’s ability to create future generations of media leaders.”

A limited number of seats are available for the luncheon. To inquire, contact Meg Jones in the USM Foundation office at 601.266.6292 or meg.jones@usm.edu. For more information on the “Campaign for Mass Comm,” visit www.usmfoundation.com/masscomm
