The University of Southern Mississippi Department of History’s Center for the Study of War and Society is serving as primary host for the annual conference of the Society for Military History March 14-17 in New Orleans.
The 80th meeting of the society incorporates the theme “War, Society and Remembrance” and is also supported by local partners Southeastern Louisiana University and the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
Southern Miss professor of history and Center Fellow Dr. Andrew Wiest will welcome attendees on the conference’s opening day.
“This conference is the top national conference of its kind, gathering the leaders in the field of the study of war and its effects on society - a varied group of scholars, journalists, and military professionals,” Wiest said. “It is where the new history and theories of military practice are ground tested. What will be in tomorrow's history books, documentaries, and professional military studies starts here.”
Wiest also praised department colleagues Dr. Kyle Zelner and Dr. Susannah Ural for their work in preparation for the event, which he said will further elevate the Center’s profile in the arena of military history research.
