The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi is celebrating an historic milestone with the creation of a special calendar commemorating the facility’s 40th anniversary.

The unique 15-month anniversary calendar highlights this year’s 40th “graduating” class by featuring many of the beautiful children while sharing the history and success stories of several alumni from the past four decades.

“The 40th Anniversary calendar celebrates The Children’s Center’s history as a leader in both early intervention services and direct training of university students,” said Center Director Sarah Case-Price. “It highlights the successes of children and families served in our past and the innovative services that are still being provided at the Center.”

The Children’s Center is a clinical program in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at Southern Miss.  Since 1974, the Center has provided direct early interventions services for Mississippi’s infants, toddlers and preschoolers with communication and developmental disabilities.

Having served more than 90 children last year from 23 counties, age birth through 5, the highly qualified transdisciplinary staff of speech-language pathologists, audiologists, early oral interventionists, physical, occupational and behavioral therapists, social worker and nutritionist, continue to model best practices coupled with both passion and compassion.

Many members of the Cameraderie Photo Club of Hattiesburg donated their time and talent by photographing children for the 40th anniversary calendar. Their photographic contributions reflect each contributor’s individual style and perception.

Brent Wallace, Cameraderie Club president, noted, “One of the greatest joys of being a photographer is capturing some of the amazing expressions all children exhibit and, through the efforts of The Children’s Center, our club was granted that privilege. Not only did these beautiful children leave an indelible impression on our mind’s eye but also on our hearts.

“Every day these precious students overcome challenges that are unimaginable to most.  It is our sincere wish that these photos may serve as an inspiration to all who educate and nurture them,” he said.

As for heading into its fifth decade, Case-Price adds: “The Children's Center is committed to continuing to build a legacy of excellence in early intervention services for generations to come.”

Calendars are currently on sale for $10 each at The Children’s Center located in the J.B. George Building on campus or online at www.usm.edu/childrenscenter. Proceeds will support the ongoing work of The Children's Center. For more information call 601-266-5222.
