Civil rights figure James Meredith, author of “A Mission from God: A Memoir and Challenge for America” and the first African-American student at the University of Mississippi, gave a book talk on his latest publication March 7 at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Hosted by the Gulf Coast Libraries, attendees of the book talk and signing welcomed Meredith with a standing ovation.
Meredith, who served in the U.S. Air Force and later as a political adviser, graduated from the University of Mississippi with his degree in political science in 1963. “A Mission from God” looks back at Meredith’s courageous and action-packed life. Within the book, he challenges America to address the most critical issue of our day: how to educate and uplift the millions of black and white Americans who remain locked in the chains of poverty by improving our public education system.
