The Scripps Howard Foundation has selected Dr. David R. Davies, director of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Mass Communication and Journalism, as one of only six members of its newest class of prestigious Visiting Professors in Social Media. Educators chosen for the program are members of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

Dr. Davies’s participation in the program includes a two week ‘externship’ this summer with a media outlet, KNVX-TV in Phoenix, where he will work with its digital journalists to learn more about how technology is reshaping the delivery of news. He will share what he has learned with his students, and also benefit from having a media representative come to Southern Miss for a three-to five-day visit to share their own expertise as part of the program.

The Scripps Howard Foundation is the corporate philanthropy of The E.W. Scripps Company, a news and information entity with 33 television stations and 34 radio stations in the U.S.

“I’m delighted at this opportunity,” Dr. Davies said. “Given the rising importance of social media across all of the media professions, I’m very pleased to get a chance to sharpen my skills to be able to better help my students.”

Dr. Davies joined the Southern Miss faculty in 1991, first serving as adviser to the school newspaper, The Student Printz, and then later as chairman of the USM Department of Journalism. He also served as dean of the Southern Miss Honors College. In addition to his duties as director of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism, he also directs USM’s popular British Studies Program. Before coming to Southern Miss, he worked for 10 years as a reporter in Arkansas, including at the Arkansas Gazette.
