The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Art and Design’s biannual Faculty Show opens Sept. 12 with a reception at 5:30 p.m. at Oddfellows Gallery, located at 119 East Front St. in downtown Hattiesburg.
The show features works of art created by full-time and adjunct faculty. This year's show includes works in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, photography, digital media and a recent book publication.
Mark Rigsby, assistant professor and museum director at Southern Miss' Woods Gallery, says the works in the Faculty Show reflect a variety of approaches to art creation and the artistic excellence of the art and design faculty at Southern Miss.
“The Faculty Show is always a great opportunity for students to see the work being produced by faculty in the Department of Art and Design. It's important that they know that we're not only their teachers, but we're also professional practicing artists who are passionate about making art,” said Rigsby. “Hopefully viewing our work provides some creative inspiration for our students, and also helps justify the high standards that we require of students in all of our studio courses.
“All of the arts do so much to enrich our lives and our community. In the past decade I have seen downtown Hattiesburg blossom into a vibrant downtown community, and it's without question that the arts, and a genuine interest in the arts, have played a vital role in that development.”
The exhibition can be enjoyed at Oddfellows Gallery from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each Wednesday through Saturday between Sept. 12 and Oct. 16. The Faculty Show is free of charge, but many works are for sale.
