Department of Dance Partners with ClancyWorks for Two-Week Residency

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Dance is hosting a two-week residency with Maryland-based Adrienne Clancy and her company ClancyWorks.

Clancy is recognized for her vibrant choreography, master teaching, and committed advocacy for arts in education.  This residency includes a variety of performance, community, artistic, and educational events.

Julie Hammond White, associate professor and director of dance education and her colleague Kelly Ferris Lester, assistant professor of dance, are very excited about the residency.

“ClancyWorks is a decade-old dance company. Dance companies are a lot like restaurants; if it makes it past a decade, it will last,” said White.

“The first week of the residency is a lot about planting seeds,” added White.  “Collaboration is important. Clancy has always said, ‘You can do more with others standing next to you than you can by yourself.’”

During the first part of the residency, Clancy instructed Southern Miss dance majors in master dance classes and led two professional development seminars designed for K-12 educators in dance and traditional classrooms. She also set a choreographic work on USM company dancers and helped USM dance majors create both a K-12 outreach concert and a series of K-12 master dance classes that will be performed and instructed in select K-12 schools during the second residency.

In the second week of the residency, April 14 - 21, Clancy and her company return to teach additional master classes, partner with USM dance majors in K-12 educational outreach events, and perform as featured guest artists on the USM Repertory Dance Company Concert at Studio 115 in the Theatre and Dance Building April 18 – 21.   During this performance week, the community is invited to attend an open rehearsal with ClancyWorks on Wednesday, April 17 from 3:30 – 5 p.m., and an informational curtain talk on Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m.

This ClancyWorks residency is funded in part by grants received from Partners for the Arts, SouthArts and the Mississippi Arts Commission.  For more information on Adrienne Clancy, visit www.clancyworks.org.  For more information on the USM ClancyWorks Residency, contact Kelly Ferris Lester or Julie White in the Department of Dance at 601.266.4161.
