DuBard School Professional Development Program Receives Reaccreditation

When it comes to teaching individuals with language disorders, including the written language disorder of dyslexia, the DuBard School for Language Disorders’ phonetic, multisensory teaching-learning strategy, the DuBard Association Method®, has the credentials to back it up.

Recently, the DuBard School for Language Disorders’ professional development program in the DuBard Association Method® at The University of Southern Mississippi received a certificate of reaccreditation from the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). This is the DuBard School’s third continuous accreditation, dating back to 1998 – one of the first of IMSLEC’s accredited programs.

“Thankfully, dyslexia has been receiving increased attention lately,” said Dr. Maureen Martin, DuBard School director. “With the expansion of the public’s knowledge on dyslexia, along with additional statewide screening requirements, the need for professionals in the field is expanding.

“Through our professional development program, professionals can be trained in the DuBard Association Method®, a phonetic, multisensory method for teaching individuals with communication disorders, including the written language disorder of dyslexia, how to read, write, listen and speak.”

IMSLEC is an internationally recognized accrediting organization that ensures the methods used for intervention for individuals with dyslexia and related disorders are of the highest standards.

Dr. Mary Farrell, current IMSLEC president and program director for the Center for Dyslexia Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, said, “Programs that are accredited meet IMSLEC standards for the multisensory reading content and methodology needed for effective intervention for individuals with dyslexia. Accreditation of a program, therefore, informs parents and professionals that the teachers or therapists trained in that program have received training in the evidence based instructional procedures required to produce positive, measurable results in literacy for individuals with dyslexia.

“Parents and professionals who seek services through DuBard School, one of the most longstanding programs to have IMSLEC accreditation, can be assured that instruction will be of the highest, standards-based quality.”

In order to maintain accreditation through IMSLEC, organizations must reapply every seven years. The application process includes a written application, an extensive self-study and site visit. DuBard School is accredited in all four areas: Teaching, Instructor of Teaching, Therapy and Instructor of Therapy.
