Greek Life Celebrates Increased Grade Point Average among IFC Members

Fraternity chapters with membership in The University of Southern Mississippi’s Interfraternity Council (IFC) are marking a milestone as its collective grade point average (GPA) increased to make it the highest in more than two decades.

As a fraternity system, the IFC achieved a 2.86 GPA in fall 2013, the highest on record since fall 1993 for either the spring or fall semesters. The IFC GPA has been above the All-Male and All-University Average for the past year and increasing the separation to three-tenths of a point this past fall.

Two of the IFC chapters, Pi Kappa Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon, rated at a 3.06 GPA. Further, Sigma Alpha Epsilon achieved a 2.98 Chapter GPA, their highest on record at Southern Miss. Also, Delta Tau Delta achieved a 2.98 Chapter GPA.

IFC advisor Charles Childress wants to see the fraternities top themselves at the end of this semester. “My goal is to have the IFC groups at a collective 3.0 GPA this spring and we have developed an innovative system of incentives to accomplish this.” he said.

IFC membership includes Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa Tau, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Both Childress and Eric Granberry, a junior from Gulfport, Miss. who serves as IFC’s vice president for public relations, also noted that along with IFC’s recent academic achievement comes the philanthropic and community service given by Greek Life members.

That service includes an average annual contribution of $175 through charitable fundraising and 25 hours of community service per Greek Life student. Childress also noted that more than 70 percent of campus leadership positions in various organizations are held by students who are members of fraternities or sororities.

Such accolades help the fraternities with recruitment and put the Greek system, as well as the university, in a positive light. “We’re building a culture of success that knocks down a lot of the stereotypes about Greek Life on college campuses,” Granberry said.
