The University of Southern Mississippi invites female high school students from the Gulf Coast area to attend its sixth annual “Day at USM” event Friday, Nov. 4 at the University’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Sponsored by the Women’s and Gender Studies program, “Day at USM” is an opportunity for female students from coastal-area high schools to visit the Gulf Park campus and learn about college degree programs and careers. The event will be held from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. and will cover all six academic colleges at the University.

“The Women’s and Gender Studies program started the event in an ongoing effort to empower young women as to their choices for a career,” said Susan Mullican, instructor of philosophy and religion and event organizer. “The students get to meet with both faculty and business women who can explain the field and answer questions they might have about what is required to become a veterinarian, oncologist, banker, etc. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to explore whatever field they are interested in.”

Activities during the event will include presentations given by representatives from the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Business, Education and Psychology, Health, Nursing, Science and Technology; a campus tour led by the Student Government Association; and lunch with distinguished professional women. Representatives from the Office of Admissions will also be in attendance to answer questions regarding enrollment at Southern Miss.

In 2015, the Gulf Park campus hosted 102 high schools girls from Ocean Springs, Long Beach, St. Patrick and Gulfport.
