Health and Fitness Week at Southern Miss Gulf Park Set for Sept. 6-9

University of Southern Mississippi students, faculty and staff are lacing up their shoestrings in preparation for Health and Fitness Week, beginning today, Sept. 6 through Sept. 9, at the University’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. 

Organized by the Fitness Center at the Gulf Park campus, Health and Fitness Week offers a number of activities intended to renew one’s mind, body and spirit. Throughout the week, participants will be provided with a variety of opportunities to learn more about living a healthy lifestyle.

 “We have truly created a culture of wellness here at the USM Gulf Park Campus and we want to continue moving forward with this positive growth,” said Kim Beard, Fitness Center coordinator. “We have so many exciting and innovative programs and services here on campus and this is just one way that we can spread the word.”

The schedule for the week is as follows:

Tuesday, Sept. 6

Lunch and Learn: The Reality of Living with a Mental Illness, 12:15 p.m., Fleming Education Center 104

Wednesday, Sept. 7

Open House: Health Center and Student Counseling Services, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Health Center

Open House: Fitness Center, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Fitness Center

Heart Opening Yoga Class, 5:15 p.m., Fitness Center

Thursday, Sept. 8

Healthy Heart Walk, 12:15 p.m., South Lawn

Healthy Heart Zumbathon, 5:15, Fitness Center

Friday, Sept. 9

Student Nurses Association Blood Drive, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Fleming Education Center Rotunda

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Power Hour, 11: 45 a.m., Fitness Center

Stating one of her favorite quotes, “Love yourself enough to live a healthy lifestyle,” Beard said she looks forward to seeing the University community join together for a common purpose but most of all for the health and well-being of everyone involved.

“I truly hope that each person who participates in Health and Fitness Week will gain the confidence, knowledge and motivation needed to make huge strides in their health and fitness journey,” she said.
