The human resources program offered by the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi recently received a coveted stamp of approval from the world’s pre-eminent oversight organization.

The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) notified Southern Miss officials that the university’s human resources program met all the necessary guidelines and criteria for the group’s ultimate approval.

“This endorsement of our curriculum by the leading professional organization in management is a testament to the hard work and commitment undertaken by our faculty to ascertain that our curriculum is of the highest quality and advances the future careers of our students,” said Dr. Lance Nail, dean of the College of Business. “This is a milestone achievement for the College of Business at Southern Miss.”

Dr. Bret Becton, assistant professor of Management and International Business, helped formulate the blueprint for success of the human resources program. Becton said the SHRM endorsement will benefit Southern Miss business students in ways that cannot be measured immediately.

“This endorsement adds more value to a degree from the College of Business at USM,” he said. “Additionally, the endorsement will make our graduates better candidates for graduate programs in HR or related disciplines as well as more marketable on the job market if they pursue a career in human resources.”

The Society of Human Resource Management features more than 250,000 members in 140 countries, serving the needs of HR professionals and advancing the interest of the HR profession. Receiving an SHRM endorsement helps cement accreditation by the Association to Accredit Collegiate Schools of Business International.

“This endorsement is very important because it represents another piece of evidence that provides external validation for the programs within the College of Business at Southern Miss,” said Becton. “Specifically, prospective students who are interested in HR will look at this endorsement as an indication that an HR degree from USM well prepares them for a career in that field.”
