Jennifer S. Lewis, MHA, MED, compliance coordinator at the University of Southern Mississippi, and Kenneth M. Heard, J.D., director of state authorizations at the University Medical Center, made a presentation at the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors’ meeting in Arlington, Va. Sept. 12.

During the presentation, Lewis and Heard shared information on how state authorization functions generally under state statutes; how authorization functions when an institution is an approved National Counsel of State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) institution; what constitutes exceeding physical presence under NC-SARA; the impact of proposed regulations relative to Borrower Defense to Repayment and Program Integrity; and the overall potential impact of the recent closures of Corinthian and ITT tech as well as how such changes in higher education may impact accreditors and the accreditation process as a whole moving forward.
