Main Content

Interested in catching more Redfish and Speckled Trout? University of Southern Mississippi marine scientists and local professional fishing guides have teamed up to offer to help you catch more fish. The seminar “Catch More Fish with Science” will be hosted March 23 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, located at the Peck House on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus.

The USM Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s Marine Education Center (MEC) has offered this seminar in Long Beach and Ocean Springs, and is bringing it to Hattiesburg for the first time to prepare the serious and recreational fisherman. From March until August, MEC will host a seminar covering different fish species.

In the seminar, marine scientists will share no-nonsense facts about what fish eat and when they eat, and explain how time of day, tide state, water temperature, salinity, and moon phase affect the movements and appetites of popular fish species. Experienced fishing guides that know the area will impart tips, secrets and their own fishing tales, sure to help you hook-up on your target species.

The cost is $30 per individual and the event includes a chef preparing redfish and speckled trout. Southern Miss employees and students will receive a 20 percent discount. For more information and to reserve a spot, call 228.818.8833 or email marine.education@usm.edu
