Dr. Frank C. Whitesell, a retired University of Southern Mississippi professor of economics, died March 22 at Asbury Hospice House in Hattiesburg. He was 76.
A memorial service for Dr. Whitesell will be held Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 115 N. 25th Ave. in Hattiesburg, where he was a longtime member. Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg is in charge of arrangements.
A native of Columbia, S.C., Dr. Whitesell earned his Ph.D. in economics from Tulane University. He joined the USM faculty in 1968 and retired from the University in 2004. He was an ardent supporter of USM athletics and active in community service, including with his church’s Breadbasket Food Ministry.
“Frank was a big-hearted man who worked hard at being a good teacher. He shared his knowledge with junior faculty, sometimes suggesting books and offering his notes to the first-time teacher," said Dr. Mark Klinedinst, one of Whitesell's colleagues at USM. "He had a passion about understanding our monetary system, our coins and bills in particular. He used his economic knowledge after retiring by volunteering to help people who were hungry, using these abilities to get the most food at a good price.”
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Breadbasket Food Ministry, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 115 N. 25th Ave. Hattiesburg, Miss., 39401; or to the charity of your choice.
