Miss University of Southern Mississippi Celebrates Earth Day with Local Students

Hannah Roberts and Southern Miss mascot Seymour visited a first-grade class at Oak Grove Primary School as part of Earth Day activities.

In honor of Earth Day, Miss University of Southern Mississippi, Hannah Roberts visited Oak Grove Primary School in Lamar County on Wednesday, April 22, to conduct science experiments and read from the book “It’s Earth Day (Little Critter)”.

First-grade students participated in soil testing experiments, learned about environmental conservation and responsibility, and visited with Southern Miss mascot Seymour.

Roberts is a Southern Miss biochemistry major from Mount Olive, Miss., and is currently serving as Miss University of Southern Mississippi 2015. She has a passion for science and is using her love of education to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education for girls.

In 2013, she was one of only three Mississippians to win a national Barry M. Goldwater scholarship, which recognizes the next generation of great research scientists. She is also an accomplished violinist and a member of the American Chemical Society, Kappa Delta Sorority and is a Presidential Scholar.

In 2005 Roberts founded Pages of Love, a book donation organization which has collected over 20,000 books for medical waiting rooms, clinics and facilities statewide. https://www.facebook.com/pagesoflove2005?fref=ts

After graduation, Roberts will attend medical school this fall at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she plans to specialize in pediatric plastic reconstructive surgery.
