The Mississippi Dance Festival Concert is set for this Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Studio 115 of the Theatre and Dance Building, located on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. This event is free and open to the public.
The concert features work by dance professionals, including Lauren Smith, Rebecca Chandler and Erin Rockwell. Two student works from Mississippi School for the Arts, a duet by a Power APAC faculty member and a performance by the Hub Dance Collective will also be presented.
Co-founded and co-directed by Southern Miss dance education professors Elizabeth Lentz and Julie Hammond-White, the Mississippi Dance Festival is the only state-wide dance festival focused on giving public school students and teachers dance training that reinforces K-12 artistic and educational experiences.
“The Mississippi Dance Festival Concert gives our community the opportunity to see dance from all over the state and at all different levels. Professionals, professors, and students will all perform,” said White. “We want to make it easy for our community to come experience the work of these fantastic professional and student artists.”
The Mississippi Dance Festival Concert is designed to serve middle and high School pre-professional dance students and K-12 professional dance educators who seek to further their knowledge of and experience in dance. The festival, going on this week at Southern Miss, offers both beginning/intermediate and advanced classes in a myriad of dance forms and related dance subject matter.
“Teachers will be receiving CEUs in dance. This is a rare opportunity and is further evidence of our commitment to providing needed resources and experiences that support what our K-12 students and educators do,” said White.
“We had a really great response during registration for the festival. Middle and high school students from Mississippi and surrounding states have flocked to this opportunity,” White added.
