Musical Artists Sought to Participate in Southern Rap Battle

Main Content

The University of Southern Mississippi’s entertainment industry program is searching for inspired rappers to participate in the Southern Rap Battle.

Registration for the rap-off is open until Wednesday, Oct. 26. Participation is limited to 12 artists, and all participants will be required to attend a workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in College Hall on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus. The first and second rounds of the competition will be Nov. 11 at 8 p.m., with round three scheduled for Dec. 9 at 8 p.m., also all on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus. There is a $25 registration fee for each artist.

At the Oct. 26 workshop, participants will be provided with six beats created by USM entertainment industry students. Each beat can be used only once throughout the competition. In addition, the workshop will include instruction provided by English Department graduate students relating to poetry and its relation to rap and lyrics. For the competition, each round will focus on a theme and artists will need to prepare lyrical content running two to two and a half minutes; penalties will be assessed for additional time.

“By offering a theme for each round, we will challenge each artist to go back to the roots of rap to address social, political and economic issues in a creative and constructive manner,” said Jon Pluskota, Southern Miss assistant professor and director of the Southern Rap Battle.

Rap artists will be judged on lyrical content, music ability and stage presence. The top three rap artists will win studio time working with entertainment industry students from the School of Mass Communication and Journalism at Southern Miss. This project offers talented rap artists the opportunity to further their craft and hone their talents. Interested rappers can register at www.usm.edu/mcj or contact Dr. Pluskota by emailing him at jonathan.pluskota@usm.edu.
