MVSU Basketball Team, USM Faculty Join Forces to Help Underserved Children

The Mississippi Valley State men's basketball team has teamed up with the University of Southern Mississippi to bring the Raising Inspirational Sons of Excellence (RISE) education programs to three counties in the Mississippi Delta.
The Raising Inspiration Sons of Excellence (RISE) pilot project is funded by a $231,986 grant from Families First for Mississippi. With oversight by USM faculty in the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems, the project also includes participation from Men in Black and Blue Community Health Advisors (CHAs), a group of trained lay volunteers, and members of the Mississippi Valley State University men's basketball team.
The basketball players are each charged with delivering the program to the three counties and each player was be assigned to one county. The players are also mentors to participants in the programs. MVSU's players provide social support and examples on how to achieve healthy nutrition and social behavior practices.
MVSU's obligations includes: attending training sessions, they meet monthly with a CHA to discuss delivery of education sessions and any previous concerns or challenges. They also have to deliver 16 RISE education sessions on specified dates in their respective counties.
MVSU men's basketball players also has to motivate participants during educational sessions and encourage each group member to make better nutritional choices and model appropriate behaviors.
