Main Content

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted a live webinar Feb. 26 as part of the NCS4 Membership Campaign. The webinar, “Gate Entry Issues at Sport Events,” was the first in a series of webinars that NCS4 will present throughout the year.

Webinar participants engaged with top sport security professionals as they discussed National Football League (NFL) gate security issues and recapped lessons learned from Superbowl XLVII.

Presenters included: Jeff Miller, VP/Chief Security Officer of the NFL; Ray DiNunzio, Director of Strategic Security Programs of the NFL; and Donald Paisant, Chief of Public Safety for the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans. NCS4 Director Dr. Lou Marciani was the moderator.

More than 160 representatives from around the country in law enforcement, emergency management, fire safety, and government agencies participated in the webinar. The audience included individuals from both collegiate and professional programs.

The Webinar’s key points included a variety of topics. Notably, the recent evolution of NFL gate security protocol to include greater consistency of training, enhanced bag policies, and technology-enhanced methods were explained in detail. This included a recap of the augmented security practices utilized for the 2013 Super Bowl, and how those procedures affected the planning process and logistics of the event.

Access control challenges faced by collegiate venues was also explored with respect to their threat portfolios and the need for the adoption of a nationwide standardization for venue staff training. It concluded with predictions of and overall hopes for the stadium security industry as it moves into the future.

The NCS4 Membership Program provides additional opportunities for individuals and organizations to connect with leaders in the spectator sports safety and security industry. In joining the program, members receive full access to important information, resources, communication capabilities and education programs, such as the recent gate security webinar.
