Office of Leadership and Student Involvement Recognizes Outstanding Student Organizations and Student Leaders at Awards Ceremony

The University of Southern Mississippi's Office of Leadership and Student Involvement recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of its 210 registered student organizations at the Student Organization Awards and Recognition (SOAR) ceremony April 26. A review committee comprised of faculty and staff determined the winners.

Award winners for the 2016-2017 school year included the following:

*New Student Organization of the Year: Creative Collective

Given annually, this award recognizes a new student organization that has made exceptional contributions to its members and the greater Southern Miss community in its first year of registration. 

*Emerging Leader Award: Michaelah Wheat, EagleTHON

The Emerging Leader award is given to a student who has demonstrated knowledge, enthusiasm, and motivation for campus and community involvement and leadership at Southern Miss.

Community Builder: Kawan Jefferson, Student Government Association

The Community Builder award honors a student who has shown commitment and support toward developing a culturally diverse, compassionate, and educated university community reflective of inclusive excellence.

Student Organization Advisor of the Year: Stephen McCay, Pi Kappa Phi

McCay works in the Union and Programs Department as the Assistant Director for Operations. He wins the awards for his work advising the men of Pi Kappa Phi.

Student Organization Member of the Year: Kay Ann Simmons, Honors College First-Year Mentoring Program

The Outstanding Student Organization Member award is presented to a student who shows exceptional commitment to academic achievement, community service, campus involvement and leadership.

Student Organization Officer of the Year: Ryan Bolanos, Student Alumni Association

The Outstanding Student Organization Officer awards a student organization leader that shows exceptional commitment to academic achievement, community service, campus involvement and leadership.

Student Organization President of the Year: Zachary Agee, Southern Miss Activities Council

The Outstanding Student Organization President honors a president who shows exceptional commitment to academic achievement, community service, campus involvement and leadership.

Student Organization of the Year: I.M.A.G.E – Increasing Minority Access to Graduate Education

The Student Organization of the Year recognizes the student organization that has gone above and beyond in the past year to make exceptional contributions to their members, the student of Southern Miss, and the greater Southern Miss community.

Leadership and Student Involvement Hall of Fame Inductee: Sid Gonsoulin

Gonsoulin serves as the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. The Leadership and Student Involvement Hall of Fame was founded in 2001 and recognizes an individual who has had a direct impact on the success of student organizations.
