Photography Professor’s Work Featured in Final Print Edition of Silvershotz

Main Content

Betty Press, a University of Southern Mississippi photography professor in its Department of Art and Design, has been honored to be part of the last printed Silvershotz journal, featuring the work of 11 selected photographers across the country from members of (WIPI) Women in Photography International.

Silvershotz, a prestigious Australian magazine of contemporary photography, is a well-known and successful brand across the USA and Europe.  The WIPI articles and images are a 45-page feature, tapping the rich and diverse source of photography within WIPI members’ work,  Silvershotz, with its signature layouts—lavish color, tack-sharp, pristine reproductions and advertising-free content—is devoting 45 pages to eye-popping work from eleven WIPI photographers. Mississippi based photographer Betty Press is one of the WIPI featured artists with her documentary black and white images titled, “ I am because we are: African wisdom in image and proverb.”

WIPI is a not-for-profit association promoting the works of women photographers. The Los Angeles-based organization’s history began in the 1980s with a series of exhibitions and lectures in southern California. The year 2000 marked the start of the 21st century and changes for WIPI. Jean Ferro and Nancy Clendaniel joined photography historian Peter Palmquist to reorganize WIPI, and advance its growth to the online resource center and archive it is today.

Other photographers featured in the journal are cityscapes by Lilyan Aloma, the fine art equine photography of Merrie Asimow, mixed media still lifes by Jean Ferro, Cirque du Soleil portraits by Ivy Bigbee (her image of pierrot made the front cover), documentary photography of Cathy Greenblat, Amie Vanderford, Betty Press and Kathryn Jacobi; the nature photographs of Joyce P. Lopez and Wendi Schneider; and digitally-derived color compositions by Joann Scherf.

With the closing of so many bookstores, this month marks the last printed journal of Silvershotz (available only to current subscribers or those who wish to order a copy from the website) and the launch of its new online folio experience.

The first online edition is free and can be accessed on the iPad or on a computer using Google Chrome, Firefox or IE11.  In May there will be 35 back editions converted and accessible in the online archives, plus the launch of Volume 9, Edition 1 as an online interactive journal subscription.
