In March, members of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Pride of Mississippi Marching Band will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland to participate in the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In order to help defray costs for attendees, the students themselves have organized a 5k run and one mile fun run dubbed the Screamin’ Eagle Dash.

The event takes place on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. starting at Pride Field on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus.

“We are so proud of our students for organizing this fun event,” said Dr. Jamie Standland, director of The Pride. “We are grateful for the many sponsors and supporters who have come to our aid to make this a wonderful experience for The Pride and so we can share our talents on a worldwide stage.”

As an added perk, participants may pick up a registration packet in person at Parris Jewelers on Hwy 98 West for a chance to win an emerald. Registrations packets may be turned in the day of the race. Only those who register at Parris Jewelers are eligible to win the emerald. Pre-registration may be done online at through January 17.

General registration is $30. Members of Pine Belt Pacers and Southern Miss students with ID may register for $25. Groups of 10 or more registering at one time are $20 a person. This may done online through pre-registration or the day of the event.

Sophomore drum major Mallory Jennings, a math licensure major from Hattiesburg noted, “It would be something a lot of people could be involved in.”

A top runner will be named in each 10-year age bracket, male and female. Also, the top three males and females will receive an award. In the fun run, awards will be presented to the “fastest stroller” and “eagle pride award” to the most spirited dresser.

Jimbo’s Southern Style Catering will be on hand at the end of the race with music by Rayziano and Friends. Along the route, members of The Pride will perform to spur on the racers and create a celebratory atmosphere.
