Second Installment in GCRL Angler Seminar Series Focuses on Cobia

Main Content

The second installment of the four-part seminar series, “Catch More Fish with Science,” will be held Thursday, April 17 at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL).

The seminars are scheduled from 6-8 p.m. in the Caylor Auditorium on the GCRL campus, located at 703 East Beach Drive in Ocean Springs. Remaining seminar dates are May 22 and June 19.

Jim Franks, Senior Research Scientist, GCRL’s Center for Fisheries Research & Development will start the session off with a scientific description of the migratory patterns of cobia and where you’ll be most likely to find them during the year, followed by information on their diet and habits.

Danny Pitalo, Gorenflo’s Tackle and Marina, will share with participants about bait, lures, tackle and techniques to use to land these big fish. This seminar is titled “The Secrets to Catching More Cobia”.

After learning everything possible about the cobia and how best to catch them, attendees will be treated to hors d'oeuvres prepared by Chef Patrick Heim of Taste! Catering at a reception immediately following the seminar. The focus will be on healthier, more flavorful seafood dishes that are simple to prepare. The menu for the evening includes: smoked fish dip on crostini, grilled shrimp tacos and lemonfish ceviche.

The response to this series has been tremendous. Sam Clardy, Coordinator of Education Programs, Marine Education Center noted, “Our ‘Catch More Fish with Science’ series has received great response by the fishing community. People have been steadily registering for the program. At the first of the four part series we had over 116 participants. We are encouraging people to sign up online at http://www.usm.edu/gcrl/mec/fishing.seminars.php to be sure they have a seat."

It is imperative to reserve a seat in advance due to limited space.

Partnering with GCRL in this seminar series are: Captain Ronnie Daniels Fisher Man Guide Service, Shore Thing Fishing Charters, Gorenflo’s Tackle & Marine Store. Sponsors include: Charter Bank, Sports Unlimited, Coastal Angler Magazine, Mississippi Gulf Fresh Seafood, Quality Seafood and Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic.
