Teams from The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus, as well as local community colleges, recently continued their tradition of competing in the university’s annual Scholars Bowl. This year, the Sigma Tau Delta Turtles were named the winning team to receive the 2014 Golden Eagle Trophy, which allowed the trophy and title to return home to the Gulf Park campus after Pearl River Community College took home the prize in 2013.
A total of eight teams competed in the Scholars Bowl, with three teams from local community colleges, five teams from the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus and a special non-competition round featuring students from West Harrison High School.
The winning team, led by Dr. Damon Franke, associate professor of English at Southern Miss Gulf Coast, included students Marla Cooper, Kyla Grace and Valerie McWilliams. Other members of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, contributed to the team’s win and included the chapter’s president, Crystal Stinson, and society member, Sharon Jasper.
Franke, who contributes the team’s new t-shirts as their bonding force, said the team’s win “was a true team effort.” Having competed in the Scholars Bowl for several years, Franke added, “Our team’s mascot, the sure and steady turtle, finally did win the race.”
In the final round of the competition, two Southern Miss Gulf Coast teams competed for the trophy. Although it was an exciting final round, the Sigma Tau Delta Turtles earned more points over team TLC and were declared the winners by Scholars Bowl emcee Jeff Lawson, news anchor for WLOX-TV.
Of the eight teams competing for the coveted Golden Eagle Trophy, one was from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, two from Pearl River Community College and remaining teams were comprised of Southern Miss Gulf Coast students and employees. As teams went head-to-head throughout the day in 30-minute trivia matches, winning teams advanced to the next round until the final two teams were left to compete.
The annual Scholars Bowl is sponsored by the Office of the Academic Dean, Dr. Tom Lansford. Scholars Bowl co-chairs were Linda Jordan and Christy Elias, along with the event’s committee members, Ashley Halferty and Jack Covarrubias.
