Ernest Olivares, assistant director of maintenance and custodial services for the Department of Residence Life at The University of Southern Mississippi, has received the Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP) credential from the APPA, which is the association dedicated to leadership in educational facilities.

The CEFP program is designed to confirm professional achievements in the educational facilities field and illustrate a superior understanding of what it takes to create and maintain safe, functional and inspiring learning environments.

“Ernie Olivares is an incredible asset to Southern Miss and the Residence Life department. This accomplishment represents the pinnacle of the educational facilities field and only verifies his expertise in this profession,” said Dr. Chris Crenshaw, director of the University Physical Plant. “I applaud his achievement, which has been accomplished by less than 70 professionals nationwide.”

Olivares, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, joined the Southern Miss staff seven years ago.

“We are fortunate to have Ernie in service to our student housing residents at Southern Miss. This hard earned CEFP certification is yet another example of Ernie’s dedication to his work and Southern Miss,” said Dr. Joe Paul, vice president for student affairs.

APPA promotes leadership in educational facilities for professionals seeking to build their careers, transform their institutions, and elevate the value and recognition of facilities in education. APPA provides members the opportunity to explore trends, issues and best practices in educational facilities through research, publications, professional development and credentialing.

Formerly the Association of Physical Plant Administrators, APPA is the association of choice for 5,200 educational facilities professionals at more than 1,500 learning institutions throughout the United States, Canada and abroad. For more information, visit www.certification.appa.org.
