University of Southern Mississippi graduate Kristin Howard has been chosen to participate in the 2014 Leadership Academy class which honors rising stars in the accounting profession.
Howard, a native of Durango, Colo., now residing in Gulfport, Miss., will join 37 other young professionals for the Leadership Academy set for Sept. 28-Oct. 2 in Durham, N.C. The academy is sponsored by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).
“I feel very lucky to have been selected,” said Howard. “I heard that there were many applicants this year, which makes me feel very good about myself and my qualifications. I have worked very hard to get to the place where I am in my career, and to be recognized for my hard work is truly an honor.”
Howard earned her Bachelor of Science in business administration from Southern Miss in 2009 and her Master of Business Administration in 2011. She acquired her CPA license in 2013 and is currently employed as a CPA and lead tax accountant at Palazzo & Company LLC in Biloxi, Miss.
During the intensive five-day program, participants will learn strategic planning techniques and develop personal success skills for handling complex management challenges. Leadership Academy participants, all under age 36, will discuss pressing issues facing CPAs and the accounting profession with some of the profession’s most influential leaders.
Howard hopes to use the experience to learn valuable skills that would enable her to grow as a leader and succeed as a CPA professional.
“I also hope to network with many other CPAs and develop these professional connections for life,” said Howard. “This experience is interactive, and I flourish in this type of non-lecture style learning.”
The AICPA selected the 38 attendees of the Leadership Academy from more than 100 candidates recommended by their employers, state CPA societies, or both.
