Southern Miss Celebrating Founders’ Day March 27

Main Content

For University of Southern Mississippi student Jeffrey George, this year’s Founders’ Day celebration will be especially significant, as he will take the oath of office as president of the school’s Student Government Association.

George, a sophomore from Covington, La. and other SGA executive officers elected this semester will be sworn in as part of the schedule of events on Thursday, March 27 that will mark the 104th anniversary of the university. Southern Miss was created by an act of the Mississippi Legislature in 1910, when it was first known as Mississippi Normal College.

“This day is significant because Southern Miss is all about leaving it better than you find it, as Dr. Joe Paul (Vice President for Student Affairs) tells us when we come in as freshmen,” he said. “It’s a time to recognize the people who have done some much for our great university and reflect on what Southern Miss has been, what it is now and what it will be in the future.”

Dr. Ann Blackwell, a Southern Miss alumna who serves as dean of its College of Education and Psychology, concurs with George. "I look forward to Founders' Day every year,” she said. “It's an opportunity to focus on the rich heritage of our university and celebrate the important achievements of faculty, staff and students.”
