The University of Southern Mississippi chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) received the Gold Delta Award for heightened membership during a National Workshop held earlier this month in San Antonio, Texas.

The award is presented to chapters that have experienced a minimum 35 percent increase in membership from year to year. The Southern Miss chapter of ALD produced a 69 percent increase as membership grew from 71 members in 2011 to 120 this year.

“I am very happy that we received the award. Our group works very hard to stand out, and we are delighted to know that we have influenced students on campus to join our efforts in leadership and service,” said Jasmine Thomas, past-president and current student advisor for ALD at Southern Miss.

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society for first-year undergraduate students who obtain a 3.5 grade point average or higher. The society is based on leadership and community outreach.

Each year the national organization provides thousands of dollars in scholarships to worthy students. This year two Southern Miss students were awarded ALD scholarships – Tyler Brown, James Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship and Jasmine Thomas, Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship.

Current Southern Miss ALD President Kati Perry, Vice-President Crysta Lorenz and other chapter officers are working hard to keep membership on the upswing. To that end, they have organized a Freshman Outreach event on Nov. 8 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in Room H of the R.C. Cook Union Building. All freshmen currently enrolled at Southern Miss are invited to attend.
