Southern Miss College of Business Welcomes 5 New Faculty Members

The College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi will feature some new faces among its faculty when the 2016-17 academic year begins on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

The five new additions include:

  • Joanne Cao and Holly Syrdal in the Department of Marketing and Merchandising as assistant professors of Marketing
  • Shirley (Min) Liu in the School of Accountancy as an assistant professor of Accounting
  • Jason Pierce and Ali Dogru in the Department of Management and International Business as assistant professor of Management and visiting assistant professor of Management, respectively.

“We are proud to have new faculty joining us this year,” said Dr. Faye Gilbert, Dean of the College of Business. “Each one brings an expertise in scholarship in his or her respective academic discipline and an affinity for the type of transformative teaching excellence that is a cornerstone of Southern Miss. It is an exciting time for all of us in the College of Business.”

Dr. Cao received her doctorate from Louisiana Tech University and conducts research in consumer behavior. Her research has been published in the Journal of Selling.  

Dr. Syrdal received her doctorate from the University of Texas at Arlington and conducts research in the areas of social media marketing, services marketing, non-profit marketing, and ethics. Her research has been published in Harvard Business Review, Journal of Retailing, Journal for Service Science, and Contemporary Issues in Education Research.

Dr. Liu received her doctorate in Accountancy from Florida Atlantic University and she conducts research in R&D expenditures, risk premiums, stock options, and earnings quality. Her research has appeared in Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting and Review of Pacific Basin Financial Markets and Policies. She is also a licensed CPA in the state of Massachusetts.

Dr. Pierce received his doctorate from the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University and conducts research in discretionary employee behavior, ethical decision making, and managerial problem solving. His research has been published in Journal of Management, Management and Organizational Review, Psychological Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Academy of Management Learning & Education.

Dogru is a doctoral candidate in Operations Management at the University of Alabama and conducts research in the areas of healthcare operations and capacity planning/management.
